Virtual Audition Details

Dear ASU Band and Orchestra Students,

We are excited to resume making music and learning with you this fall semester! In order to accommodate all students, regardless of how they are attending classes this fall, we have made the decision to move all wind band and orchestra auditions online. Please read the below information carefully, as audition requirements are based on what group(s) you are auditioning for.

Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Music Theatre and Opera Instrumental Ensemble or Wind Symphony

To be considered for Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Music Theatre and Opera Instrumental Ensemble or Wind Symphony, we ask that you video record yourself playing the excerpts located here. You will find they are either identical to what was planned for in-person or they have been shortened. Please limit the video to no more than 6 minutes.

Unless your studio teacher has advised differently, the video recording is to be one continuous take, with the excerpts in the order they appear in the PDF, without any edits of any sort. Please let us know if your circumstances make it necessary for you to only submit audio. You may take some time between excerpts, but do not stop or pause the recording. Allow the recorder to capture the time you take between excerpts.

Uploading The Video

Once you have completed the video and are ready to submit, please go to this link where you will fill out a series of questions and upload your video. Regardless, the file can be no larger than 1 GB. Please complete this no later than 5 p.m. (Arizona Time) on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.

Philharmonia

Virtual auditions will be held August 25 and 27 from 4-7 p.m. (Arizona Time) via Zoom. The Zoom link for August 25 is here and August 27 is here. Excerpts for strings are here under the Strings tab. For brass, woodwinds, and percussion, please prepare two contrasting excerpts of no more than 2 minutes each from a solo and/or orchestral piece of your choice. Please sign up for a time slot here. Zoom auditions are the preferred method. However, if you are unable to audition during the above windows, please send a link to an unlisted non-password protected video (YouTube preferred) of your playing to Julie Desbordes at Julie.Desbordes@asu.edu no later than Sunday, August 23, 2020.

Concert Winds (Maroon and Gold Concert Bands)

For Fall 2020, we are going to hold one rehearsal a week on Tuesday night from 7:30 - 9 p.m. and will begin online. Our initial focus will be learning the basics of multi-track recording via the free Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) at www.bandlab.com. If Tuesday night does not currently fit your schedule, please keep in mind that the majority of the course content can be completed asynchronously. There is no audition required for this group. In the event we are in person at some point, playing tests to determine chair placement will take place then. To register, please email your full name, ASU ID number, and the class code MUP 444 (86202) to Michele Sanborn at michele.sanborn@asu.edu. For course-related questions, please contact James Hudson at James.G.Hudson@asu.edu.

Audition Results and Questions

No ensemble rehearsals take place during the first week of classes. All students who complete and submit an audition or register for a non-auditioned ensemble for Fall 2020 will receive an email notification about ensemble placement on or before 5 p.m. (Arizona Time) on Friday, August 28, 2020. Should you have not received an email by that time, please contact Ensembles Administrator, Laura Roosen, via email at Laura.Roosen@asu.edu.

We look forward to seeing you very soon. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to us.
