Biography

Toby Yatso is ASU's music theatre coordinator, a member of Actors’ Equity Association, and Artist-in-Residence at The Phoenix Theatre Company.

Favorite regional stage credits include Alex in the one-man play Buyer and Cellar (ariZoni Award winner), Bert in Mary Poppins (ariZoni Award winner), Buddy in Elf, Orin et al. in Little Shop of Horrors, Frank in It's Only a Play, David in Bullets Over Broadway, Actor 2 in Baskerville, Baritone in The All Night Strut, Clown 2 in The 39 Steps, Lancelot (et al.) in Spamalot, Malcolm in The Full Monty, Leo in The Producers (ariZoni Award winner), Harold in ‘S Wonderful, Male in Forbidden Broadway, Cosme in Glorious (ariZoni and Encore Society Award winner), Corny Collins in Hairspray, Joe in The Spitfire Grill, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz, and Princeton/Rod in four productions of Avenue Q (Encore Society Award winner).

Yatso has also played Tom in Hunter Gatherers at Actors Theatre, Ash in Evil Dead: The Musical at Nearly Naked Theatre Company (ariZoni Award winner), Mr. Mayor/Wickersham Brother in Seussical at Childsplay, Orin (et al.) in Little Shop of Horrors at Arizona Broadway Theatre, Boy in If You Give a Mouse A Cookie at Phoenix Theatre’s Cookie Company, and Herman in The Most Happy Fella at Quisisana in Maine.

A regular performer, narrator, and collaborator with The Phoenix Symphony, Yatso has performed concert roles as Riff in West Side Story (conducted by Tito Muñoz, starring Matt Doyle), Ewart in The Music Man, featured soloist in An Evening with Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Mr. Sowerberry in Oliver!  Narrated concerts include Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead, Gerald McBoing BoingTubby The TubaThe Pirate KingA Young Person's Guide to the OrchestraRomeo and JulietThe Remarkable Farkle McBrideUzu and Muzu from Kakaruzu, Peter and the Wolf.

For the Festival of New American Theatre at The Phoenix Theatre Company, Yatso has acted in staged readings of Tropical Heat by Rich Orloff, Nureyev’s Eyes by David Rush, and Mozart: The Rock Opera, Cookin's a Drag by Michael Barnard and Clint Edwards, impromptu roles for the 24-hour Theatre Project, music directed and played piano for Second To Nun by Anton Dudley and Michael Cooper, and musically directed and sang in Composer/Lyricist cabarets featuring the works of Michael Mott, Jamie Maletz, Kelly Pekar & Abigail Cline, and Alexander Tom & Amanda Prahl.

Yatso has been acting, directing, choreographing, and music directing for several companies in the Valley of the Sun, including Davisson Entertainment, Theater Works, Nearly Naked Theatre Company, Mesa Encore Theatre, Central Community Theatre, Algonquin Theatre Company, and Greasepaint YouTheatre. He has twice hosted the ariZoni Theatre Awards Ceremony, has won five ariZoni Awards for acting in major roles, both plays and musicals, and received fifteen nominations throughout his years of participation.

Yatso has been active for over a decade as an educator and coach for musical theatre training programs at Childsplay, Bay View Music Festival in Michigan, and The Phoenix Theatre Company, including five years with TPTC's summer Musical Theatre Intensive, of which he was a founding acting instructor and director. Before joining the Arizona State University faculty in 2011, he was on the faculty of Arizona School for the Arts, teaching and developing acting and music theatre curriculum, and directing productions such as RunawaysSmileLucky Stiff, and Totally RED! As a graduate teaching assistant at ASU, Yatso was the recipient of the 2007 Herberger College Distinguished Teaching Award.

For the Music Theatre and Opera department at the ASU School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Yatso teaches courses in acting and music theatre performance, directs productions, and serves as the music theatre coordinator.
