Faculty Position

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Music seeks Faculty Associates to teach three courses: Beginning Composition (MTC 123) in spring 2020, a core course in the undergraduate Composition program in the School of Music; Beginning Songwriting (MUS 294), an undergraduate elective; and Mariachi ensemble (MUP 489/587).

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Music seeks Faculty Associates to teach two courses: Beginning Composition (MTC 123) in spring 2020, a core course in the undergraduate Composition program in the School of Music, and Beginning Songwriting (MUS 294), an undergraduate elective.

The successful candidate(s) will teach in-person courses, prepare course materials, evaluate student work, and assist students. Faculty Associates positions are one semester, non-benefits eligible, fixed-term appointment with no tenure implications, not to exceed .40 FTE. The number of courses are contingent upon needs, funding and sufficient enrollment. Salary is based upon qualifications and assigned teaching load. Individuals employed as Faculty Associates may not hold multiple, non-benefits eligible appointments at Arizona State University.

The Beginning Composition course (MTC 123) is intended or freshmen and sophomores in the composition concentration, introducing composing techniques. This course may be repeated for credit. The class is taught with a combination of short lectures, class discussions, and collaborative exercises. The Beginning Songwriting course (MUS 294) covers topics of immediate or special interest to a faculty member and students. Songwriting is a unique art form involving many personal and technical skill sets. Beginning Songwriting takes participants on a learning journey through the songwriting process from inspiration to production while continually reinforcing personal perspective and decision making. Each week will feature a different topic relating to the songwriting process with activities that emphasize introspective, collaborative, and technical learning. Weekly topics include: the self, words, storytelling, melody, harmony, form, putting it all together, collaboration, and sharing. The semester will concluded with an optional open-mic style sharing session. Open to everyone. No experience required.
