Undergraduate Audition Requirements: Strings

Violin

  • All major and minor three octave scales and arpeggios.
  • Two works contrasting in style and tempo.

      Additional requirements for performance (MUP 127) degrees

  • An outer movement of a standard concerto.
  • A movement from one of Bach’s Sonatas or Partitas for solo violin.

Viola

  • All major and minor three octave scales and arpeggios.
  • Two works contrasting in style and tempo.

      Additional requirements for performance (MUP 127) degrees

  • A movement from one of Bach’s Suites for solo cello.
  • A movement or piece from the standard repertoire (i.e. Bloch’s Suite Hebraique, Handel’s Casadesus B Minor Concerto, Hummel’s Fantasie, Stamitz’s Concerto, Vaughan Williams’ Suite, Weber’s Andante and Hungarian Rondo).

Cello

  • An etude.
  • Two works contrasting in tempo and style.

Double Bass

  • All major two octave scales.
  • An etude exemplifying the applicant's technical standard.
  • Two works contrasting in tempo and style.

Guitar*

  • Two major and melodic-minor scales of your choice in at least two octaves.
  • Three solo works demonstrating different musical styles and techniques at an intermediate level. Selections may include or be equivalent in difficulty to pieces such as:
  • (Renaissance) a work originally for lute or vihuela
  • (Baroque) a movement from a suite by Sanz, DeVisee, Bach or Weiss, or a sonata by Scarlatti
  • (Classical) studies by Sor, Carcassi, Aguado, or Giuliani
  • (Romantic/Modern) studies or preludes by Villa-Lobos, Brouwer, etc.

*Prior private instruction from a qualified classical guitar teacher is strongly advised. You are required to submit a repertoire list.  Additionally, you may be asked to sight-read a short piece to be selected at the time of the audition.

Harp

  • Prepare one movement transcribed from any of the unaccompanied violin partitas and sonatas by J.S. Bach (any edition).
  • Etude No. 10, from Ettore Pozzoli, Etudes of Medium Difficulty.
  • One orchestral cadenza; one concerto movement.
  • One programmatic work from the standard harp repertoire.
  • All solo literature is to be performed from memory.
