Step 2: Apply to the School of Music
As an undergraduate applicant, you must apply to BOTH Arizona State University and the Herberger Institute School of Music.

The second step in the application process is to apply online to the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music. School of Music additional application materials must be submitted directly to the School of Music admissions office. Errors in submission of your materials may delay the review of your application for admission and scholarship. Please review ALL information carefully.

All completed School of Music application materials must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Friday which falls four weeks prior to the requested audition date. Applications received after that time may not be accommodated.
NOTE: Those wishing to be considered for music scholarships should be admitted to the University and audition on one of the priority audition
dates before February 15. Because of faculty availability and the number of applicants, it may not be possible to honor special requests of any kind for particular times on an audition day. No scheduling changes will be honored within three weeks of an audition date.
School of Music Application Requirements
You must apply to Arizona State University before you apply to the School of Music. Your 10-digit ASU ID number must be included on your School of Music application. All application materials must be received in completion 4 weeks prior to the requested audition date before an audition will be scheduled. You will receive an emailed confirmation of your audition date about one week after the complete application materials are processed. You will receive an e-mailed confirmation with the exact audition time about three weeks prior to your audition date.
NOTE: If you are auditioning on more than one instrument, you must submit separate application materials for each instrument. Please note prioritized choice of majors on each application.

- This online form works best using Firefox or Internet Explorer 8.
- Before you begin the application, you must have compiled the following:
- References: You must include the contact information for the 3 references writing you recommendation letters in the online application. Please have these addresses ready.
- Essay: You must write a 300-500 word essay describing your educational background, objectives and future career plans. The essay should be written in a word processing program that allows you to grammar and spell check your work. Then, you will copy and paste this into the online application.
- If you are unable to submit an online form, please contact the School of Music to arrange for a paper application by e-mail.
- After submitting your online application, you must submit the following to the School of Music:
- Repertoire list: You must submit a list of music you have studied and consider a part of your solo repertoire. Voice applicants may include any roles you have performed, but do not need to include choral repertoire unless you were a featured soloist. Repertoire list forms are downloadable from the online application.
- Letters of recommendation: 3 confidential letters of recommendation must be submitted with your repertoire list or sent directly by the recommender. Recommendation letter forms are downloadable from the online application.
- Artistic resume: The artistic resume is optional and should be submitted with the repertoire list, as a separate document.
Additional materials are required for the composition program:
Music Composition
If you are planning on majoring in composition, you must submit an additional, separate application, along with a portfolio containing a maximum of three written samples of your work as a composer. Original compositions are preferred. A CD or tape may also be submitted, but is not mandatory. Do not send originals, as the submitted material(s) will not be returned. When you come to the School of Music for your audition, you will also be scheduled for an interview with a music composition faculty member. Admission into the Music Composition program is subject to a successful audition in your major performing medium, as well as an interview with composition faculty member(s) and evaluation of your original compositions.

Music Education
When you come to the School of Music for your audition, you will also be scheduled for an interview with a music education faculty member. The purpose of the interview is to provide our admissions committee with additional information about your potential as a music education major. The Music Education rating will be used in combination with the audition results when making admission decisions.
Additional materials are required for the music therapy program:
Music Therapy
When you come to the School of Music for your audition, you will also be scheduled for an interview with a music therapy faculty member. The purpose of the interview is to provide our admissions committee with additional information about your potential as a music therapy major. The Music Therapy rating will be used in combination with the audition results when making admission decisions.

When you apply to ASU, you will be asked to indicate your intended major. Because entrance into the School of Music is selective, you also will be asked to indicate your second choice major. If you pass your audition, the School of Music will change your major to music. In the event that you are admitted to ASU, but not selected for the School of Music, you will be placed in the second major choice you selected at the time of application.
