Undergraduate Prospective Students
4 Steps to Applying:
Step 3: Audition
Auditions are required for all prospective undergraduate music majors. The audition is performed for representative members of the music performance faculty. Evaluations are based on technical and musical proficiency. You should expect to be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the date confirmed for your audition, a music theory diagnostic exam, an interview if applicable, and a piano diagnostic exam if your application states 3 or more years of recent piano experience. Please make your travel arrangements with this in mind and allow the entire day for the audition process if possible. Special requests will be accommodated if possible, but scheduling depends on faculty availability. No scheduling changes will be honored within three weeks of an audition date.

Multiple Instrument Auditions
- You may perform a live audition on the primary instrument of your choice.
- For additional instruments, you must submit a recorded audition for faculty consideration.
- Each audition requires a separate application to the School of Music. You must indicate on each application that you are auditioning on more than one instrument.
- If you are accepted on more than one instrument, you must choose one instrument and inform the School of Music Admissions Office of your choice.
- Note: Students who wish to take classical lessons (MUP 111/311) while pursuing Jazz Studies at ASU must pass a classical studio audition to be eligible to take these lessons. Please follow the suggested MUP 111/311 audition requirements listed under each instrumental area.
Ad Hoc Auditions (Instrumental auditions only*)
If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled audition dates offered by the School of Music, but wish to come to Arizona State University for a live audition in lieu of sending a CD or tape, it may be possible to arrange an ad hoc audition with faculty from your performance area on another date. Ad hoc auditions are to be requested directly from the faculty member. Once the faculty has granted the ad hoc audition, submit the School of Music application and indicate the ad hoc audition date and time, and the name of the faculty member granting the audition. All School of Music application materials must be complete before the ad hoc audition date. Please note that faculty members are not obligated to grant ad hoc auditions.
*This option is not available for those applicants auditioning in voice.
Recorded Auditions
Those who are unable to visit the campus may submit a recorded audition; however, if you wish to be considered for available scholarships a live audition is preferred. No tape will be reviewed without completed School of Music application materials. Audition tapes become the property of Arizona State University and are not returned. Your audition tape must conform to the same audition requirements as an on-campus audition. Please see the audition requirements by instrument and degree.
Recorded auditions should be of high quality and U.S. compatible in either video or audio format. All tapes or compact discs should be clearly labeled with your name, phone number, repertoire, instrument and degree sought (BM or BA, etc.).
Your audition tape must be sent to the School of Music Office of Admissions. We are not responsible for recordings that are not accompanied by the application to the School of Music, those sent to Undergraduate or International Admissions or those sent directly to faculty.
NOTE: Recorded auditions must be received, with application materials in completion, no later than 5 p.m. on Feb. 5.
