DMA Audition Materials and Requirements: Strings

Violin

  • A complete concerto from the 19th- or 20th-century.
  • A complete Bach Sonata or Partita for solo violin.
  • An additional work of contrasting style.

Viola

  • A complete Bach Suite for solo cello.
  • A complete viola concerto such as Bartok, Walton, Hindemith or Schnittke.
  • An additional work composed within the last fifty years, such as Penderecki Cadenza or Ligeti Sonata.

Cello

  • A complete concerto.
  • A complete Bach Suite for solo cello.
  • An additional work of contrasting style.

Double Bass

  • A complete concerto.
  • Three or four movements from one of Bach’s Suites for solo cello.
  • An additional work of contrasting style.

Harp

  • Forty-five to fifty minutes of solo repertoire to include one work of J.S. Bach, one complete 20th-century sonata, one contemporary work and one programmatic work.

Guitar

  • Four contrasting works, such as a complete Baroque suite or concerto, showing advanced technique and interpretative skills.
