Conducting: Choral
DMA Audition Materials and Requirements: Choral Conducting
The DMA in choral conducting is one of the four options in the ASU Herberger College School of Music’s unique doctorate in conducting. The degree is designed with the belief that one is first and foremost a conductor, with a specialty in choral, orchestral, wind band, or theatrical music. As a student pursuing this degree, you take several courses in common, regardless of emphasis area. You also have opportunities to learn about the repertory and conducting issues for each medium, including the option of acquiring a cognate in a second conducting area.
Each degree is distinct in its audition requirements. Please read the requirements carefully.
- A current curriculum vitae.
- A video (DVD or VHS) that shows you conducting in rehearsal. This should be about 10 minutes long. The camera should be placed from the point-of-view of the singers (not behind you), and all instructions to the choir should be clearly audible and understandable. Please be sure that at least a portion of the tape shows you responding to the group, giving instructions, and making changes, not merely final run-throughs of already polished material.
- Feel free to include a video from a performance as well, though this is not essential.
- A copy of a research paper that you submitted for a graduate course in music. This will give me some insight into your thinking and writing.
- Recognizing that (3) may not be of recent vintage, please submit a 1- or 2-page statement about your goals for graduate study. From this essay, express your ideas and assess how well you accord with what we offer. Quality of writing is a factor.
You may submit these four items David Schildkret at any time. Auditions and interviews are on March 17, 2008.
For best consideration, it would be ideal to have all materials by January 15, 2008.
Doctoral students in choral conducting are eligible for Graduate Teaching Assistantships.
After receiving information from David Schildkret, you may proceed to the Application Process.
