Brass
line

DMA Audition Materials and Requirements: Brass
The entrance audition must display a level of development that allows you to start with the listed repertoire or comparable literature.  The Doctor of Musical Arts degree requires demonstrating more advanced development of embouchure, articulation, range, tone, flexibility and musicality.  Live and taped auditions are accepted; however, a slightly longer program of music is suggested for taped auditions.

Trumpet
No specific works are required.

  • Perform several contrasting styles from the standard repertoire that demonstrate all facets of your playing and show proficiency on B-flat, C, E-flat and piccolo trumpets. 
  • Sight-reading.
  • Transposing at sight.
  • A few orchestra calls from standard audition materials.

Horn

  • Two complete major solo works from contrasting style periods.  A program that includes a solo horn work such as Buyanovsky’s Espana, Krol’s Laudatio, Persichetti’s Parable or a major concerto such as the Gliere, Jacob or second Strauss is recommended.
  • Seven orchestral excerpts of your choice.
  • Sight-reading and major & minor scales in two octaves may be included in the audition.

Trombone

  • Six orchestral excerpts.
  • Two selections that are comparable in difficulty to the following:
    • Hindemith’s Sonata
    • Pergolesi’s Sinfonia
    • David’s Concertino
    • Grondahl’s Concerto
    • Tomasi’s Concerto
    • Martin’s Ballade
    • Gregson’s Tuba Concerto
    • Brahms’ Four Scriptural Songs
    • Spillman’s Concerto

Euphonium

  • Major and minor scales.
  • Sight-reading.
  • Six band/orchestra excerpts.
  • Two selections from the following:
    • Charlier’s 36 Etudes: Transcendantes
    • Arban’s Characteristic Studies
    • Joseph Horovitz’s Concerto for Euphonium
    • James Curnow’s Symphonic Variants
    • Jan Bach’s Concert Variations
    • David R. Gillingham’s Blue Lake Fantasie
    • Herbert L. Clarke’s Carnival of Venice
    • Simone Mantia’s All Those Endearing Young Charms
    • Amilcare Ponchielli’s Concerto for Fliscomo Basso

Tuba

  • Major and minor scales.
  • Sight-reading.
  • Six orchestral excerpts.
  • Two selections from the following:
    • Charlier’s 36 Etudes: Transcendantes
    • Smith’s Top Tones for Trumpet
    • Arban’s Characteristic Studies
    • Vaughn Williams’ Concerto for Bass Tuba
    • Kraft’s Encounters II (1966)
    • Penderecki’s Capriccio
    • Plog’s Three Miniatures
    • Gregson’s Concerto for Tuba
