Students DMA in Orchestra Conducting The DMA in orchestra conducting is one of the four unique options in the doctoral conducting program in the ASU Herberger College School of Music. The degree is designed with the belief that one is first and foremost a conductor, with a specialty in orchestral, choral, wind band or theatrical music. In this program you take a core group of common courses, regardless of emphasis area. You also have opportunities to learn about the repertory and conducting issues for each medium, including the option of acquiring a cognate in a second conducting area. The School of Music DMA conducting program trains highly-qualified musicians to become conductors and scholars, emphasizing a thorough knowledge of repertory, knowledge of historical and analytical issues, an understanding of efficient, effective rehearsal technique and a clear, expressive conducting technique. As a doctoral student, you receive considerable individual attention and have regular opportunities to rehearse and conduct ensembles. Doctoral students in orchestral conducting are eligible for Graduate Teaching Assistantships. "This recording by the Arizona State University Symphony is admirable (it doesn't sound like a student orchestra)."
