Community
The Music Therapy program in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music works in partnership with a variety of health care and special education agencies in the area. These partnerships involve placing students in facilities to provide music therapy services, developing music therapy programs, supporting research efforts and providing information and consultation on music therapy. A partial list of community partnerships include:
- Arizona State Veteran’s Home, Sunnyville Unit (Phoenix) ASU Alumnae Kristin Fray, MM, MT-BC, provides supervision for preclinical students to learn music therapy techniques with veterans.
- Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (Phoenix) This developing partnership may soon include a music “jam session” for people with Alzheimer’s to enjoy music making with college students and health care providers.
- Banner Baywood Hospital (Mesa) This acute hospital setting is a pre-clinical host site for students to learn bedside music therapy in a medical setting.
- Clare Bridge of Tempe - Memory Care (Tempe) This facility is a partner in educating ASU MT graduate students, providing a conference room for lectures and a cooperative learning environment for students to provide practical experience in assessing and providing treatment to memory care residents, most of whom are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. The facility is also a host site for Pre-clinical student practicum work.
- Lauren’s Institute for Education-LIFE (Queen Creek/Gilbert) Lauren’s institute for Education provides special education, habilitation, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and music therapy to children with special needs. Clinical directors Kathleen Walsh, MT-BC and Rich Maston, MT-BC have developed opportunities for observing, preclinical placements, and for internship in music therapy.
- Freedom Manner Group Home – Adult Head Injured (Phoenix and Mesa) These preclinical placements help students to learn music therapy interventions that serve the needs of people who have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury.
- Friendship Village Skilled Care Center (Tempe) This facility has had a long-standing partnership with ASU, providing students an opportunity to learn how to apply music therapy practice to the elderly in long-term care.
Maricopa Medical Center (Mesa and Phoenix) Bedside music therapy is provided to patients in Child Life, Maternity, and other acute medical units.
- Mohammed Ali Parkinson’s Center at Barrow Neurological Hospital (Phoenix) Music therapy helps to improve physical, speech, social and emotional symptoms connected with Parkinson’s Disease.
- Rover Elementary School (Tempe) This host site is a self-contained classroom for students with physical and intellectual disabilities.
- Tempe Adult Day Care and Tempe Young Adult Center (Tempe) These day treatment programs provide recreational programs for adults with intellectual and physical challenges. Students learn how to run small groups using interventions that help to improve social skills, communication and coping with a disability.
- Webster Elementary School (Mesa) This self-contained classroom provides music therapy to children with developmental delays.
