Bio: J. Richard Haefer is an Associate Professor of Musicology and Ethnomusicology at Arizona State University. His areas of specialization include North American Indian Music, Music of Mexico (mariachi, norteño, music of the Mexican Colonial period), organology and Gregorian Chant (especially Latin hymnody). He is the director of the ASU Mariachi Program (Mariachi Diablos del Sol and Mariachi A.S.U.) and the professional Phoenix–based Mariachi Corazón de Phoenix. He has published articles and recordings in all of the above areas in both academic and popular venues. He is also the music director of the Schola Santa Cruz and Mater Misericordiæ Choir of the Traditional Latin Mass Mater Misericordiæ Mission in Phoenix.
