Undergraduate Students
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education is designed for individuals who plan careers as teachers in elementary and secondary schools, and in community settings. Students choose concentrations in Instrumental Music, Choral/General Music and String teaching. The degree leads to K-12 certification for the State of Arizona, and this teaching certificate makes it possible to teach in other states.
Course work for the Bachelor of Music in Music Education includes applied music study, ensemble participation, and theoretical and historical studies. Educator preparation includes education courses and other experiences in school classrooms through the School of Music and the College of Education, culminating in a one-semester student teaching experience.
The basic plan below outlines a typical four-year program of study. To stay on track for timely graduation, check with your advisor every semester before you register for courses.
Freshman Year
- MUE 110, Introduction to Music Education
- MUE 161, Introduction to Music Therapy
- Begin instrument methods courses, piano class, and/or voice class, according to program requirements
- Introduce yourself to the music education faculty
- Sign-up for the undergraduate music education undergraduate email list
Sophomore Year
- MHL 201, MacLiteracy for Musicians
- Take the music education sophomore audition
- Apply in January of the sophomore year to be admitted to the ASU Teacher College’s Professional Teacher Preparation Program (PTPP) by the fall of the junior year
- Begin conducting course sequence
- Continue instrument methods courses, piano class and/or voice class, according to program requirements
Junior Year
- Begin teaching methods/practicum courses in the fall
- Take one Teachers College (PTPP) course each semester
- Complete one field experience course each semester
- Complete conducting and instrument methods/piano/voice class courses, depending on concentration
Senior Year
- Finish College of Education courses in the fall
- Complete third field experience in the fall
- Student teach in the spring
