Prospective Students

The music education degrees in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music are designed for those who are interested in careers in music education in public and private schools, in community settings and in colleges and universities.  The School of Music offers undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in music education, as well as post-degree certification programs and courses. Summer study is available in all degree programs. Course work leading to certificates in Kodály and Orff pedagogies is also available.

The undergraduate program leads to a Bachelor of Music degree and a teaching certificate in the State of Arizona.  Those who have an undergraduate degree and wish to obtain a teaching certificate can enroll in the post-degree certification program, or can pursue post-degree certification studies while enrolled in the master’s degree.

Master’s degree coursework can be completed while teaching full-time or part-time, in the evenings and in the summers, and with new online options for some classes.

Master's degree applicants also have the option of enrolling as full-time students.

The doctoral degree in music education is a research degree that attracts a national and international cohort of students each year.  Graduates teach in leading colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, and follow career paths in school administration and arts education leadership.
