African Drum Ensemble

The African drum class/ensemble is under the direction of Mark E. Sunkett, ASU Herberger College School of Music professor. The rhythms taught are drawn from the drumming cultures of Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Ghana and Nigeria. The ensemble also focuses on the rhythms of the Mandingue, Malinke, Bambara, Diola and Wolof of Senegal. Drum ensembles have included the Sabar, Sowrouba and Djembe.

This class is a learning, as well as, performing ensemble. As part of the Ethnomusicology program, African Drum is taught through oral tradition although some written materials are available from time to time. As a student, you are encouraged to use your memory in retaining the rhythms, songs and folklore presented. Cultural information on the origins of the material accompanies the music being played, along with information on its historical development. By learning in the traditional way, you also gain personal insights on the cultures and ethnic groups covered.

No prior music knowledge is required, merely a desire to understand the music of various African cultures. You are graded on your willingness to learn, your attendance and your ability to reproduce the music taught through the semester. Class enrollment is open to the general campus community.
