Lauren Bass won first place in the Arizona Opera Student Auditions.

Doctoral music education student Wesley Brewer was selected to present his research on the drum majors of the ASU Sun Devil marching band at the The 2007 ArtsWork Graduate Colloquium was held at the Fiesta Inn in April. Brewer was also one of several music education graduate students also presented their research during the annual convention of the Arizona Music Educators Association in January of 2007. 

Janet Cape, as master's music education degree student, presented a paper on the Mesa Caledonian Pipe Band, a community-based bagpipe ensemble.

Alycia Carlson, sophomore saxophone major and a Woodwind Finalist in this year's ASU Concert of Soloists Competition, was selected to perform as soloist during the "Rousseau Sixth Annual International Master Class" held in Minneapolis at the University of Minnesota. Carlson performed the "Concerto for Saxophone and String Orchestra" by Alexander Glazunov.  

Undergraduate vocal performance major Justin Carpenter sang a lead in the Phoenix Youth Theater’s production of Little Women in the spring.  

DMA voice candidate Alexis Davis has been offered a contract to perform in the 2007 Utah Opera Festival this summer. 

Dr. Doan's (faculty) students took first place both in undergraduate and graduate levels of Arizona NATS and sang several major leads in the LOT production of  Ariadne auf Naxos, including Ariadne and the Composer.

Michelle Fisco, junior saxophone major, was a Woodwind Finalist in this year's ASU Concert of Soloists Competition.

Anthony Garcia (BM in composition) received a commission from Central Michigan University for a new choral work to be premiered in the fall of 2007.

Erica Glenn (BM in composition) won the 2006 Chanticleer Student Composer Competition for her choral work, "Gather Ye Rosebuds" and was a semi-finalist in the 2007 Sorel Organization Composition Competition for "Jabberwocky," also for SATB chorus.  Her children's musical, Between the Lines, was accepted for publication by Lazy Bee Scripts in 2006, and has received numerous performances in the United States and the United Kingdom. Glenn also won the OIAM chamber opera competition. Participants received a topic on April 1 and had a month to write a piece for a chamber opera. This year's topic was Aesop's fables.Glenn crafted the piece for piano, flute and five singers.

Josh Gottry (MM in composition) has been commissioned jointly by the percussion professors at Oregon State University and the University of South Dakota to write a new work for percussion duo. 
DMA vocal perfomance student Kenny Miller sang nine Messiah performances last season and undergraduate Tenor Eric Gustafson sang his first Bach St. John Passion Evangelist in April.

Jazz students Jeff Gutierrez, John Sims, Danielle Cooke, and Shaun Lowecki are part of a quartet that has been invited to the second Rencontres Internationales des jeunes musiciens (International meeting of the young musicians) in Grenoble, France in June 2007.  The trip is sponsored by city of Grenoble, the Phoenix Sister Cities office and US Airways.

Undergraduate student Matthew Herzberg, the President of the ASU collegiate music educator’s chapter on campus (CMENC) recently received a professional achievement award from the National Association of Music Education for overseeing a service project that benefited Arizona’s high school band students.  For more information on the ASU CMENC chapter, visit the Web site that was created this year www.asu.edu/clubs/cmenc .

Joshua Hillman, piano student of Baruch Meir, won the first prize at the First Pianovision World Piano Competition in Atlanta.

Colte Julian, music theater master’s student, and Aaron VanderYacht, music theater undergraduate, sang the male lead in two different Arizona productions of The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown.  

Therese Kerbey (DMA in music education) presented a summary of her research on Jeannie Pace, one of the first female conductors of a U.S. Army band.

DMA voice candidate Brianna Kramer sang the role of Mrs. Ott in the Arizona Opera production of Carlisle Floyd’s “Susannah”. 

Ryan Lehr, DMA trumpet student, won the Concert of Soloists Wind Ensemble category.

Jennifer McConaghie, a junior studying music education, won the Presser Foundation Award.

Michelle McConkey (DMA) and Samuel Tsugawa presented a joint research project on the ASU African Drumming class, and Brandon (DMA) and Sarah Haskett (MM) presented a joint research project on the Eastlake Drummers, an community-based African drum ensemble.  Both the class and ensemble are led by ASU School of Music professor Mark Sunkett. 

Tom Peterson's (BM in composition) composition for organ, "Ballade," won the 2007 Beethoven Club Composition Contest and will be featured on the Belvedere Chamber Music Festival in June. Also Peterson’s "A Gentle Whisper" for mixed chorus was performed at the 2006 Society of  Composers National Festival in San Antonio.   

Jack Phillips (MM in composition) was awarded a commission for a new work for solo violin and orchestra for the Yue Festival in Boston. 

Samuel Price, BM sophomore trombone performance major, was awarded a full scholarship for the second summer to the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. He was the winner of the Joan Frazer Memorial Award and will present a lecture recital as part of this cash award.

Doctoral music education student David Rickels, under Sullivan’s supervision, has recently had a quantitative research paper accepted for publication to the Journal of Band Research: “A Comparison of Contributing Variables in Marching Band Festival Results.” Rickels, a prize winner in the 2006 ArtsWork Graduate Colloquium was held at the Fiesta Inn in April Colloquium, was recognized for his 2007 submission on high school students' perceptions of career choice in music education. 

Senior music theater student Brad Rupp just finished a run at the Hale Center Theater portraying the lead role of Smudge in Forever Plaid.

Erin Ryan, senior Music Theater major, sang the role of Echo in Lot’s production of Strauss’  Ariadne auf Naxos and the leading role of Cunegonde in the Lyric Opera Theatre production of Candide.  Ryan will attend the Canta in Italia program in Florence, Italy this June. 

Brian Sadler's, composition student, "Action Brass" series was performed by the Kissmah Brass Ensemble in New Mexico during the Freedom Days 4th of July celebration and was accepted for publication by Brassworks 4 Publishing.

School of Music Students Perform for 1200 Children: School of Music students performed a concert for 1200 elementary school children in the Virginia G. Piper Performing Arts Center on the Xavier College Preparatory School Campus.  The April concert featured soprano soloist Brynn Terry, the Fanning Piano Trio (Stephanie Harger, clarinet; Derek Stein, cello; and Patrick Fanning, piano), and the Herberger Quintet (Jeanie Jang, flute; Nikolaus Flikinger, oboe; Natalie Lehr, clarinet; John Veloz, bassoon; and Gustavo Comancho, French horn).  The Herberger Singers made a special appearance to perform three vocal jazz pieces, including an arrangement of Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies" by Steve Shank, a doctoral student in choral conducting. A special feature of the concert was a guest performance by the Brisas Mallet Masters, a group of 21 5th-grade students from Kyrene de las Brisas Elementary School in the Kyrene School district.  The students played four Walt Hampton arrangements on xylophones of various sizes, including very large baritone and bass instruments that required them to stand on boxes and step ladders to play.  The Brisas Mallet Masters are led by Karen Monks, a music educator in the Kyrene school district and a mentor teacher for ASU music education students. The concert was part of a music education program sponsored by David Katzin and was coordinated through the School of Music's Create Access program—a project focused on creating positive change in the community through performance and education in music.

Samuel Tsugawa, a doctoral student in music education, was awarded one of three prizes given at the 2007 Graduate Colloquium on the Arts and Education sponsored by ArtsWork.  The 2007 ArtsWork Graduate Colloquium was held at the Fiesta Inn in April. Tsugawa's historical research on Merle J. Isaac, a pioneer in string music education, was selected for the award by an interdisciplinary panel of arts education faculty. 

Richard Wallis' (MM in composition) "Spirit Call" was performed at the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music, US 2007 National Festival in Iowa. 

Xi Wang, sophomore string student, won first prize in both the Tucson Symphony Young Artist Competition and the Arizona State University Sinfonieta Orchestra Soloist Competition, and performed as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras. 

Xian Meng, senior string student, was accepted and offered full scholarship by both the Juilliard School of Music and the Yale University School of Music for his upcoming Master’s of Music degree study.

Micah Wilkinson, MM trumpet student, won the third trumpet job with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

Timothy Wootton, MM trumpet student, got a job at Evangel University in Springfield, MO.

Anne Marie Wytko, current DMA saxophone student, recently completed her first year as a full time faculty member at Kansas State University, where she teaches saxophone, chamber music, and music theory.  As guest soloist with the KSU Symphony Orchestra, she premiered  a new work written for her, Craig Weston's "Elegy and Dance," a work she will perform with orchestra in England and Scotland during the coming season.  Wytko also presented concerts in Minneapolis, Wichita, Nevada and Arizona.
