Welcome to the Spring 2005 edition of eNotes. As you will see from the articles that follow, this has been a special year for our students. One of our students, Scott McIntyre (piano), was named by USA Today as one of the most outstanding 20 college students in the nation, and he won a prestigious Marshall Award; another, Laura Boone (voice), won first place in the national competition of the Music Teachers National Association; and another, Amanda Pepping (trumpet) won a Fulbright scholarship to study abroad next year. These are three examples of the quality of student in the music program at Arizona State University. During the year, our students also played a concert at a national orchestra conference with the great jazz violinist Regina Carter. They participated in an on-campus international conference featuring the music of Arnold Schoenberg. And, our students were involved in more than 500 concerts and events presented by the School of Music on campus, around the Valley, and throughout the nation. Our music students are some of the most talented in the nation, and we are very proud of their accomplishments.
We send our heartfelt thanks to Professor Dan Swaim who retired at the end of this academic year after 30 years at the School of Music. His work, and the work of our other wonderful faculty and staff, is one of the major reasons why our students are so successful.
We invite you to join us again next year for some of the hundreds of concerts and events in the School of Music.
Wayne Bailey
Director, School of Music
