Wayne BaileyAll just numbers, but magical numbers that illustrate why the School of Music is one of the best music schools in the nation. There are 789 music majors and 70 full-time faculty and 1 Pulitzer prize-winner who give 650 concerts/events each academic year. The Herberger College of Fine Arts is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The School of Music is the 6th largest accredited music school in the nation. We offered nearly $2.6 million in financial assistance to students this year from 30 states and 17 countries.

The school has begun another busy year with excellent new faculty members and many exciting events. As you will see in this issue of e-Notes we have begun work on a new fine arts facility that will enhance our already excellent music buildings. We have spent the year with Pulitzer and MacArthur prize-winner Gunther Schuller in residence. We will host an international symposium on the music of Arnold Schoenberg in conjunction with the Schoenberg Institute of Vienna and the Austrian national government. Our orchestra will be the featured ensemble along with jazz violinist Regina Carter at the national conference of the American String Teachers Association in Reno.

I wish to draw your attention once again to the SOM Web site for the Friends of Music. The Friends make a significant difference in the level of scholarship support that we are able to offer each year, and I urge you to join them in helping us help these talented young musicians.

I hope to meet you at one of our events this season.
