Concert of Soloists showcases winning student musicians and composer Each year, ASU recognizes its top student performance musicians and composer in the School of Music with a special concert of the University Symphony Orchestra. The winners of the 2001-2002 ASU Concerto Competition and winner of the 2001-2002 ASU Composition Contest (Grant Fletcher Award in Musical Composition sponsored by Arioso.com) will be featured on the program of the Concert of Soloists (Monday) Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Gammage Auditorium. The program, which begins with music from John Williams' Superman and ends with visiting composer Michael Daugherty's "The Red Cape Tango" from his Metropolis Symphony, includes performances by the five winning students: flutist Katayoon Hodiati performs Frank Martin's Ballade, pianist Brian Holman plays "Allegro" from Bartok's Concert No. 2, violist Mariona Oliu performs "Andante comodo" from Walton's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, trumpeter John Marchiando performs movements from Hummel's Concerto a Tromba principale in E, and pianist Yali Luo, who is one of two 2001-2002 Liberace Scholars in the School of Music, plays "Presto" from Saint-Saens Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22. An original work by Kirk O'Riordan, Tarantella, winner of the composition contest, will also be performed.
