School of Music takes part in Herberger College event commemorating Sept. 11 victims

RRR
reflect. react. remember.

Faculty and students from the School of Music were among those taking part in Reflect. React. Remember. Artists Respond to 9-11, an afternoon of musical solos and ensembles, theatre pieces, poetry, dance performances and visual arts by the Herberger College of Fine Arts faculty, staff and students. The Dec. 9 event, which addressed the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and their aftermath, was one of creation, born of the destruction, by more than 60 members of the Herberger College community.

Many of the 100 participants in Reflect. React. Remember. Artists Respond to 9-11 have strong connections to New York City -- some have lived and worked there, while others have family and friends residing or working at or near "ground zero." The Herberger College community has a bond with lower Manhattan, an area that is home to more than 2,000 artists and more than 200 arts organizations.

Program selections ran the gamut from Aaron Copland's "Shall We Gather at the River" to "Andante" from Schubert's Octet.

Those from the School of Music that performed on stage include:
Walter Cosand, Baruch Meir, Eckart Sellheim and Madeline Williamson, piano
John Ericson, horn
Anne Kopta, soprano
Thomas Landschoot, cello
Jeffrey Lyman, bassoon
Judy May, mezzo soprano
Robin Rio, Music Therapy, and Mark Sunkett, percussion
Carol Rodland, Gor Hovhannisyan, Mariona Oliu, Verona Rapp and Jenny Valitalo, viola
Margaret Schmidt, Music Education
Martin Schuring, oboe
Robert Spring, clarinet
Daniel Swaim, bass
Jonathan Swartz and Jonathon Moser, violin
Joann Yeoman Tongret, Lyric Opera Theatre

Behind the scenes, Carol Rodland from the String faculty served as Music Coordinator and as a member of the event's Planning Committee, along with Keyboard faculty member Eckart Sellheim. Lyric Opera Theatre's William Symington served on the Technical Staff.
