Choral Conducting DMA

The DMA in Choral Conducting is one of the four options in the ASU Herberger College School of Music doctorate in conducting program. The degree is designed with the belief that one is first and foremost a conductor, with a specialty in choral, orchestral, wind band or theatrical music. As a DMA student pursuing this degree, you take several common courses, regardless of emphasis. You also have opportunities to learn about the repertory and conducting issues for each medium, including the option of acquiring a cognate in a second conducting area. You are encouraged to have a thorough and workable understanding of the orchestra, for example, which is crucial to the performance of the great masterworks.

The DMA trains highly-qualified musicians to become conductors and scholars of choral music, combining a thorough knowledge of repertory, the historical and analytical issues underlying the music, vocal technique and pedagogy, an understanding of efficient, effective rehearsal technique and a clear, expressive conducting technique. You receive considerable individual attention and have regular opportunities to rehearse and conduct ensembles.

Doctoral students in choral conducting are eligible for graduate teaching assistantships.
