DMA in Conducting (Choral Emphasis)

The DMA in Choral Conducting is one of the three options in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Music doctoral conducting program. The degree is designed with the belief that one is first and foremost a conductor, with a secondary specialty in orchestral, theatrical music, or wind band. Graduate students pursuing this degree take several common courses regardless of emphasis and also have opportunities to learn about the repertory and conducting issues for each medium.

The ASU doctoral conducting program endeavors to train highly-qualified musicians combining a thorough knowledge of repertory, the historical and analytical issues underlying the music, vocal technique and pedagogy, an understanding of efficient, effective rehearsal technique, with clear, expressive conducting gestures with emphasis on non-verbal communication. ASU graduate conductors receive significant individual attention and have regular opportunities to rehearse and conduct ensembles.

Auditions for the DMA choral conducting degree are granted by adjudication, after the candidate have submitted an application to the ASU Graduate College and School of Music and received an invitation. The next audition will take place on Tuesday, February 21, 2012.

Doctoral students in choral conducting are eligible for graduate teaching assistantships.
