Guitar Ensemble Recital with Guest Composer Stephen Goss

Guest composer Stephen Goss joins the ASU Guitar Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Matt Gould. Other music performed includes chamber music from Austria, Canada, England, Italy, Mexico, Russia and the US written by composers Mauro Giuliani, Oliver Hunt, Jan Järvlepp, Bryan Johanson, Nikita Koshkin, Ennio Morriconi, Manuel Maria Ponce, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alfred Uhl, Andrew York, The Beatles plus film music of composer Ennio Morriconi famous for his theme for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

Welsh composer/guitarist Stephen Goss writes communicative and accessible music that draws freely on a number of styles and genres. These eclectic influences result in the unexpected juxtapositions that characterize much of his work. Goss’ has been performed in over 40 countries worldwide and recorded on the EMI, Decca, Telarc, Conifer Classics, Carlton Classics, GSP, quartz music, Cadenza, BMG and Hallmark labels. Recent commissions come from: David Russell (winner of the solo instrumental Grammy Award® in 2005), William Bennett, Xuefei Yang, Thomas Carroll, the Bhavan Institute of Indian Arts, the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral and Duo46. He has received funding from Sir Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones, the Wellcome Trust, and Arts Council England. As a guitarist, Goss has worked with many of today's leading composers including Takemitsu, Henze and Elliott Carter. He has played concertos with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the English Sinfonia and other leading orchestras, has toured and recorded extensively with the Tetra guitar quartet, and performed alongside guitarists John Williams and Paco Peña . He currently heads up the Department of Composition at the University of Surrey, UK.
