Auditions

All undergraduate music applicants are required to perform a live audition or submit an audition recording. All performance-based graduate degrees require an audition.

The audition is performed for representative members of the music performance faculty. Evaluations are based on technical and musical proficiency. Auditions are not scheduled until after completed application materials are received. Because of faculty availability and the high volume of applicants, we are unable to accommodate late applications or honor special requests for particular times on an audition day. Please pay special attention to the application deadlines and audition requirements for your specific program of interest. No scheduling change requests will be considered within three weeks of an audition date.

Undergraduate Applicants: An application to the School of Music (in addition to the Undergraduate Admissions application), repertoire list, three letters of recommendation, and proof of English Proficiency (if applicable) are required prior to being scheduled for a live audition. An audition date/time will be scheduled only after complete application materials are received. Please allow the entire day (8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for the audition process when making travel arrangements. Review application requirements and apply online here.

Graduate Applicants: An application to the School of Music (in addition to the Graduate College application), three letters of recommendation, official transcripts, degree-specific program requirements, and proof of English proficiency (if applicable) are required prior to being scheduled for a live audition. An audition date/time will be scheduled only after complete application materials are received. Please allow the entire day (8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for the audition process when making travel arrangements. Review application requirements and apply online here.

Prescreening Required for All Voice, Undergraduate Composition, Doctoral Performance Applicants: In order to be considered for a live, in-person audition, applicants for all voice concentrations and all doctoral performance concentrations must submit a prescreening recording by October 1 for spring admission and December 1 for fall admission. Please review prescreening requirements thoroughly. Prescreening recordings are only accepted via SlideRoom. DVD/CD submissions received are neither reviewed nor acted upon. Applications received without a prescreening recording uploaded to SlideRoom will be considered incomplete, and the applicant will not be considered for an invitation to a live audition.

Ad Hoc Auditions (Required for organ applicants, not available to voice applicants)
If you are unable to attend one of the scheduled audition dates offered by the School of Music, but wish to come to Arizona State University for a live audition, it may be possible to arrange an ad hoc audition with faculty from your performance area on another date. Ad hoc audition requests are made directly to the faculty. Once the faculty has granted the ad hoc audition, submit the School of Music application with the Ad Hoc Audition section completed. All School of Music application materials must be received at least one week prior to the ad hoc audition date. Please note that faculty members are not obligated to grant ad hoc auditions. The final date for spring admission ad hoc auditions is November 30. The final date for fall admission ad hoc auditions is February 28.

Recorded Auditions
Those who are unable to visit the campus for a live audition may submit a recorded audition uploaded to SlideRoom only. DVD/CD submissions received are neither reviewed nor acted upon. Applicants submitting a recording will not be eligible for scholarship consideration. Audition recordings must conform to the same audition requirements as an on-campus audition, unless otherwise noted. No recording will be reviewed without completed application materials. Audition recordings must be submitted to SlideRoom, with all application materials, by November 1 (Spring admission) or February 1 (Fall admission).
